The Reconstruction Educational Day is designed to be an exciting journey in such important chapter of skull base surgery. It starts with the anatomical basis of the main flaps and the harvesting techniques. Then each specific anatomical area is covered including anterior and lateral skull base. The idea is to follow a ladder approach from minimum to maximum to facilitate the selection of the best reconstructive option. To conclude the day, a special session highlighting complex cases and complications.
The Reconstruction Educational Day should be attended by residents, fellows and experienced surgeons with interest in cranial base reconstruction. Surgeons of different specialties and subspecialties (Rhinology, Neurotology, Head and Neck Surgery, Oculoplastic Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery) will benefit from this Educational Day.
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the anatomy and vascularization of flaps commonly used in skull base reconstruction.
- Differentiate size of defects, low-flow and high-flow intraoperative CSF leak and their impact on the reconstructive technique.
- Use effectively a ladder of reconstruction from minimum (grafts) to maximum (free flaps) and identify the impact of comorbidities on this ladder.
- Recognize reconstructive nuances of lateral approaches: endoscopic transcanal, transmastoid and middle fossa.
- Formulate an effective plan for the cranial base reconstruction and be prepared for other options in case of unpredicted change.

This year’s Primer Course will be a comprehensive overview of open and endoscopic skull base surgery and will emphasize the multidisciplinary, collaborative nature of these cases and of the NASBS in general. This session will be organized in a way that the management of skull base pathology will be described in concert with the complications that the treatments may cause. We hope that all participants will learn what to do, what not to do, and how to address post-treatment complications. We invite all skull base trainees, newly practicing skull base surgeons, and anyone interesting in developing a team-oriented skull base program to attend this session.
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Choose when to operate and when not to operate on skull base lesions.
- Organize a team-based thoughtful approach to treating skull base pathology.
- Recognize and manage common complications associated with skull base surgery.

The Global Education Day will provide a comprehensive and worldwide view of different skull base surgical approaches as well as skull base pathologies through the vantage point of our distinguished roster of invited international speakers. The program is geared for neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists and related disciplines involved in the care of these patients around the world. The session will be divided into two components: Surgical Approaches to the Skull Base and Case-based review Skull Base Pathology.
At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Recognize the indications and contraindications of open vs. endoscopic approaches to the skull base.
- Demonstrate the application of key anatomical landmarks for skull base approaches.
- Develop a step-wise approach for the diagnosis and management of different skull base conditions.
