NASBS Statement on COVID-19 Transmission During Endonasal Surgery

The North American Skull Base Society has been notified of some case reports regarding the COVID-19 virus and transmission during endonasal and sinonasal procedures. At this time there are not evidence-based recommendations since we do not have data on this very novel problem. However, the nasopharynx and sinonasal cavities are high-level viral load sites. The society recommends that its members take all available and reasonable precautions to protect themselves, their staff and other patients when considering endonasal surgery. Precautions could include preoperative COVID-19 testing, maximizing personal protective equipment usage above standard OR precautions as well as performing only urgent and emergent cases. Clearly these decisions will be based on your personal practice as well as your institutional guidelines. We wish everyone well during these trying times. Please Continue to notify us if new information comes out on this topic.
