Fellowship Program Description:

The Mayo Clinic Skull Base Oncology Fellowship is a comprehensive one-year training program designed to give the fellows a broad exposure to the diagnosis and management of all varieties of skull base disorders. Typically, we have two fellows/year, one enfolded and one external. The fellowship is arranged in 3 month blocks during which the fellow is assigned to either Dr. Link or Dr. Van Gompel/Dr. Peris Celda. During the first block with Dr. Link the fellow is required to attend Clinic on non-operative days. Each faculty member operates every other week day, so there are always skull base faculty operating every day. There is also opportunity to learn Gamma Knife radiosurgery with Dr. Link doing more than 200 cases of skull base radiosurgery/year but is not required. The surgical practice is extremely busy and encompasses the breadth of skull base pathology. There is an essentially equal mixture of open and endoscopic cases. Pathologies addressed include pituitary tumors and other sellar and suprasellar tumors, spontaneous CSF leaks, meningiomas, paragangliomas, vestibular schwannomas and other benign and malignant tumors of the anterior, middle and posterior skull base. We work closely with our colleagues in other disciplines. The fellows are expected to teach the residents and oversee patient care but have very limited call responsibilities. Publication of scientific manuscripts is expected as is attendance and presentation at the annual NASBS meeting.
