| Fellowship Program Description: | The University of Pittsburgh has the first skull base program established in North America. The program and neurosurgery fellowship are based on collaboration between neurosurgery and subspecialists including: rhinology and head and neck surgery, neuro-otology, oculoplastic surgery and plastic surgery. These collaborations are the cornerstone for the innovative approaches which are the hallmark of this program. With its lineage in developing the initial field and approaches of skull base surgery extending to the revitalization of skull base surgery as one of the key centers behind the Endoscopic Endonasal Approach, this program and fellowship continue to innovate via minimally invasive corridors, such as transorbital and keyhole approaches, while appropriately applying standard skull base approaches. Fellows will have unique access to a large volume of skull base pathologies and be exposed to the full range of traditional and modern, minimally invasive approaches. In addition, the program has a dedicated didactic program including dedicated cadaver head dissection, weekly film and planning conference, monthly video case review and quarterly journal club. The fellows will also be both students and assistant faculty for the world-renowned Pittsburgh skull base course. Finally, a large clinical database as well as access to a myriad of basic science resources allow fellows to promote their individual research interests based on their unique skill sets. |
