Value Based Healthcare Data Collection

The North American Skull Base Society (NASBS) Value-Based Healthcare Committee
(VBHC) reviewed data on prophylactic antibiotic use in endoscopic pituitary
adenomectomy, finding that data is sparse and inconclusive. The NASBS VBHC has put
together an Excel data collection sheet on what we suggest all NASBS members
performing TS/EEA pituitary adenomectomy should collect.

We are asking for your willingness to share your deidentified data over a 6 months
period if at least 24 endoscopic pituitary adenomectomies are performed at your
institution. Information to be collected over a continuous 6 month period, either
retrospective or prospective, within the last 2 years or going forward includes: institution
with a number for each case (e.g. UMich1, UMich2), intraop leak, extent of resection,
tumor pathology, postop leak, presence of lumbar drain, exact antibiotic(s) and duration
given, size of defect, presence of packing, postop infectious complication and relevant
comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, smoking, BMI >40).

Data is deidentified and will be collected and analyzed at the University of Michigan. An
Exempt-Approval determination was given by the University of Michigan IRB. We have
designed the data collection, as noted above, to allow the data to be truly deidentified for
analysis (you will give a number of your choosing for the case but not a medical record
number, you will not provide OR dates or demographics, and the 6 month period must
include all consecutive cases during that time but you will not tell us what time period that
is). In keeping data deidentified, we obviously lose some information. However, there are
competing advantages of speed, inclusivity of many institutions and greater numbers for
analysis.

Data sheets for a consecutive 6 month period, when done, should be sent
to [email protected]

Thank you in advance. If you have questions, please contact the Chair of the NASBS Value Based Healthcare Committee, Erin McKean, MD, MBA at [email protected]

Download the data sheet here.

We will accept data collection sheets through the end of 2020. Data needs to be submitted in the format provided in the spreadsheet otherwise data may be not viable to be shared.
